Title optimization that survives algorithm changes

eBay changes its search algorithm 4–6 times a year. The titles that survive are the ones built on principles, not tactics. Here's a framework that has held up for 8 years and counting.

Title optimization that survives algorithm changes

The position weighting principle

60% weight

First 30 chars

30% weight

Middle 30 chars

10% weight

Last 20 chars

The keyword density principle

Repeating the same keyword 3+ times in a title is penalized. Variations and synonyms are rewarded. 'Mens Cotton T Shirt' beats 'Mens T-Shirt T Shirt Tee Shirt'.

Title rules to live by

  • Lead with highest-volume search keyword
  • Brand name in middle, not start
  • Size/color at end (filterable, low search volume)
  • No ALL CAPS (collapsed by eBay)
  • No special characters except hyphens
